We’re days away from our 4th Annual Rock The School Bells Hip-Hop Conference and Concert and we are encouraging all of you to be part of one of the most educationally driven and socially responsible events of 2011.  It is a hip-hop educational movement designed to educate and empower our youth, students, and communities.  All proceeds from the event go to educational scholarships for high school and college students.  This Saturday, during our evening concert, we will recognize this year’s Rock The School Bells Scholarship Award winners.  Among the many applications we received, we were able to award 4 deserving students.  Their stories embodies the spirit of Rock The School Bells, having gone through hardships and struggles.  But through sheer determination and resiliency, these students continue to work hard through their struggles.  Here are their brief stories.*One student had a father who left her at 9.  She worked multiple jobs since the age of 15 having to support her and her mother.  She found dance as an outlet to express her thoughts and feelings through movement.  She now currently teaches an after-school dance program.*Another student is also from a single parent household with two siblings, one of which is mentally challenged.  To escape her hardships, she uses the power of words through writing and literature.  She had to drop out of college to help support her family financially.  She is now back and thirsting for an education focusing on Asian Studies and Social Justice.*Another student has a passion in hip-hop and journalism.  He has worked tirelessly at youth programs teaching young kids about music production.  He wants to pursue in major in music production at a 4 year university.*The final student immigrated to the US from Pakistan four years ago when her father passed away.  She is currently living with her mother and 6 siblings.  Because of their financial instability, she would work to support her own education as well as help with the family’s expenses.  She is a talented artist and would love to continue her education at a 4 year university. These are just four of the many students that are needing financial assistance to achieve their dreams.  As a counselor and teacher, it is not their lack of intelligence that impedes their academic success, it is the lack of resources that are out there to help them.  Rock The School Bells strives to be that resource and to also be the linkage to other programs that assists students financially. If you’re free this Saturday, March 26, at Skyline College, please join me in celebrating these four deserving students as they receive the Rock The School Bells Scholarship Award.  The evening will also be filled with great music and positivity.  Attached is a Rock The School Bells Poster as well as our Youtube RTSB4 Commercial for your reference. If you are interested in attending, please purchase your tickets at http://rocktheschoolbells.eventbrite.com.If you cannot attend but would still like to donate to the Rock The School Bells Scholarship Fund, please go to http://www.smcccfoundation.org/.  Click on Give Direct.  Fill out the information and in the comment box, please type Rock The School Bells.  You can donate $1 to whatever you like.  Any amount helps our cause. As we say at Rock The School Bells, we call it a “movement” because it was “meant to be moved.”  I hope you all can be part of this educational movement in one way or another.  If you have any questions, feel free to email me anytime.Sincerely,Nate NevadoGeneral Counselor
